Lake Powell Map Art

Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, lying mostly in southern Utah with a small part in northern Arizona. It filled Glen Canyon after Glen Canyon Dam was built, and the land around it became Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in 1972, managed by the National Park Service. When full it holds over 24 million acre-feet, second in the country only to Lake Mead downstream. The lake is named for John Wesley Powell, the Civil War veteran who explored the river in three wooden boats in 1869. About two million people visit each year, and many rent a houseboat and find a quiet spot somewhere in the canyons. Because the water fills old canyons, the outline is a maze of narrow side arms cut into red rock, and very few lakes make a more striking map.
