Design your Flathead Lake canvasWhy Flathead Lake
Flathead Lake is a large natural lake in northwest Montana, 7 miles south of Kalispell and about 30 miles southwest of Glacier National Park. It is roughly 30 miles long and 16 miles wide and covers 197 square miles, larger in area than Lake Tahoe, with a maximum depth of about 370 feet. It is a remnant of glacial Lake Missoula and is counted among the cleanest lakes of its size and type in the populated world. Kerr Dam at the Polson Bay outlet raised the level slightly in 1930, and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have owned and run the dam since 2015. The Mission Mountains rise on the east shore and the Salish Mountains on the west. A mild climate lets cherry orchards grow on the east side and vineyards on the west, and Wild Horse Island, the largest island, covers 2,164 acres.
