Design your Big Bear Lake canvasWhy Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake is a small city on the south shore of the lake of the same name, high in the San Bernardino Mountains and surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It sits about 25 miles northeast of San Bernardino, right next to Big Bear City. Fewer than 5,100 people lived there at the 2020 census, but on busy weekends more than 100,000 people stay in or visit the valley. The Serrano people lived here for more than 2,000 years, and the valley took its name from the grizzly bears that once lived around it. The gold rush brought people in after 1861, and by 1924 there were 44 resorts. Kirk Phillips started a bus line up from San Bernardino, which helped make Big Bear the first mountain recreation area in Southern California. On a map the city is a strip of streets between the lake and the national forest.
