Lake of the Ozarks is a reservoir in central Missouri, formed when Bagnell Dam was built across the Osage River. Construction began in 1929 and the lake opened to boat traffic in May 1931. Its winding shape gave it the nickname the Missouri Dragon. The lake covers about 54,000 acres with roughly 1,150 miles of shoreline. Bagnell Dam holds the water at the northeast end, Osage Beach is the largest city on the lake, and the Niangua and Gravois arms branch off the main channel. People talk about the lake by mile marker, and every arm feels like its own small town.
