Lake George Map Art

Lake George, called the Queen of the Lakes, is a long narrow lake at the southeast foot of the Adirondack Mountains in New York. It stretches about 32 miles north to south and is only one to three miles wide, with a maximum depth of 187 feet. The Mohawk name was Kaniá:taro'kte, which means Lake-End, and James Fenimore Cooper called it the Horican in The Last of the Mohicans. The lake sits on the old route between the Hudson and St. Lawrence valleys, on the land path between Albany and Montreal. At its north end it drains through the short La Chute River, past Ticonderoga, into Lake Champlain. The year-round population is small, but in summer it can swell past 50,000, many staying around the village at the south end. Its slender shape and wooded islands print beautifully on a tall canvas.
