The Outer Banks are a 200 mile string of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. They separate Currituck, Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds from the Atlantic Ocean. The Wright brothers made their first powered flight here at Kill Devil Hills on December 17, 1903. The hundreds of shipwrecks offshore gave the sea its nickname, the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Corolla sits at the north end, Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills in the middle, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore runs south toward Ocracoke. The thin line of sand between sound and ocean is a shape people recognize at a glance.
