Nantucket is an island about 30 miles south of Cape Cod. Together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget it forms one town and county, the southeasternmost town in Massachusetts. The island was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1966, and the National Park Service calls it one of the finest surviving examples of an early New England seaport town. On a map you see the whole crescent: Nantucket Town around the harbor, Siasconset on the east shore, Madaket at the west end, and the long hook out to Great Point. In summer the population grows to around 80,000.
