Martha's Vineyard is an island just south of Cape Cod with about 96 square miles of land, the third largest island on the East Coast after Long Island and Mount Desert Island. Its name dates to the Gosnold voyage of 1602 and is one of the oldest surviving English place names in the country. The island has six towns. Oak Bluffs is known for its gingerbread cottages, Edgartown for its harbor and white captains' houses, and Aquinnah for its clay cliffs at the western tip. Chappaquiddick sits off Edgartown across a short ferry ride. In summer the population swells to more than 200,000.
