Why this city
Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. It sits on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia.
Congress established the federal capital with the Residence Act of 1790. The city was planned as a diamond on the river.
The National Mall, the U.S. Capitol, and the White House sit inside that planned street grid. The diamond outline is easy to read on a wall.
