Sedona is a city in the northern Verde Valley of Arizona that straddles the line between Coconino and Yavapai counties and sits inside the Coconino National Forest. About 9,700 people lived here in 2020. It is known for its pink sandstone formations, which seem to glow at sunrise and sunset and form the backdrop for hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. The city is named for Sedona Schnebly, wife of the first postmaster, Theodore Carlton Schnebly, and her mother said she made the name up because it sounded pretty. The first European American settler, John J. Thompson, came to Oak Creek Canyon in 1876, and the canyon became known for peach and apple orchards. In 1902, when the post office opened, there were 55 residents. Uptown Sedona, the Gallery District and the Chapel area are in Coconino County, while West Sedona is in Yavapai.
